Since finding himself on Oakland's most wanted list for reasons that still bewilder him, Chau Van has moved three times. The self described real estate consultant and freelance Web designer has held a few temporary jobs but was turned down for the only job he applied for in his field.

Some of his friends stopped returning his phone calls.

"It changed my life," Van, 37, said at a news conference Tuesday at the office of his lawyers, who last week sued Oakland, its police chief and other officers for defamation, civil rights violations and false arrest stemming from the six months he spent on the wanted list last year.

Police finally removed Van's name from the list in October, after his lawyers filed a damage claim. But in Internet searches, his name still shows up describing him as an alleged violent felon, said attorney . Burris said one goal of the suit is to get the city to make "aggressive efforts" to clear Van's name by declaring his innocence.

"Being on the most wanted list can get you killed," Burris said.

City officials have declined to comment on the lawsuit. Police representatives did not respond to a reporter's inquiry Tuesday, the day Van stood before the media for the first time to discuss his life since his name inexplicably showed up on Oakland's most wanted list of criminals.

Van, who has no criminal past except for a 2007 drunken driving conviction, imitation rolex lady datejust, was living in San Leandro in February 2012 when a friend telephoned him with a television report that he was wanted for an Oakland gang shooting. He thought it was a joke, he said, but an Internet search quickly turned up multiple news articles in which police described him as a dangerous criminal.

After spending almost a week holed up at home at a lawyer's suggestion, imitation buy rolex oyster perpetual datejust, he went to police headquarters to clear things up and was promptly thrown in jail, he said not for the shooting, but for allegedly beating a man with a baseball bat.

He said he had done neither, but the next day, Police Chief issued a statement saying, "We have one less criminal on the street." Van was released in three days, without being charged, but remained on the most wanted list for six months while his lawyers vainly pleaded his case with police.

During that time, "I was ashamed of looking at people," Van said. "I was frightened for my life."

Van, whose lawyers had described him as an accountant Monday, said he actually works in real estate and Web design. After his police encounter, he worked for a time as a cook in Hawaii, later helped a friend build a home, and applied for a Web design job in San Diego after taking a training course. Van was the only graduate of the course who was not offered a job, Burris said.
